Turkish Tipping Etiquette

Tipping in Turkey is not as structured as in many other countries. While tipping is more common in some service sectors, such as restaurants and hammams, in others it’s viewed more as an indicator of exemplary service.

When dining out at restaurants, especially in cities such as Istanbul, a tip of 10-15% should be left for the waiter. Again, while never compulsory, restaurant service is one area where the Turkish do tip.

If you decide to enjoy a Turkish hammam during your trip, then a 10-15% tip is expected. Frankly, it will be hard to avoid since the hammam attendants will line up to bid you goodbye. In this situation, split 10-15% of the bill between all the attendants who provided your service.

When dining out at a cafe or ordering at a bar, leaving the equivalent of one Euro for your drink is a much-appreciated gesture.

Taxi drivers don’t expect large tips. The appropriate thing to do when paying a taxi driver is to round up your fare to the nearest Turkish Lira (TL), or increment of 5 or 10 TL, and tell them to keep the change. For example, for a fare of TL 23.50, hand the driver TL 25 to keep.

Unlike with taxis, tipping hotel staff is common practice in Turkey. If a porter takes your bags up to your room, tip the equivalent of 1-2 Euros per bag. For housekeepers, leave 3-5 Euros for each night of your stay.

Remember, tipping in Turkey is less about following rigid rules and more about expressing gratitude.

How to Tip in Turkey

Restaurants

Tipping at restaurants is a gracious way to acknowledge the efforts of the waitstaff. A generous tip at a restaurant is between 10-15%.

Some restaurants will include a service charge on the bill. This typically only happens at high-end restaurants or when dining with a large party. If a service charge has already been applied, you are not expected to provide an additional tip.

You should always tip at restaurants in cash and using Turkish Lira. Some restaurants, especially in Istanbul, will be able to add the tip to your bill but be prepared with cash in smaller towns.

Bars and Cafes

When drinking at cafes, it’s a nice gesture to leave a 5% tip on your table to show appreciation.

At bars, tip the barkeep directly. A tip of 5%, or the equivalent of 1-2 Euros per drink, is sufficient.

Hotels

If a hotel porter carries your bags up to your room, it’s customary to tip them the Turkish Lira equivalent of 1-2 Euros per bag.

To show gratitude for the hard work of the housekeeping staff, it’s a nice idea to tip them the equivalent of 3-5 Euros per night. 

Some hotels have a tip jar at the front desk. In this case, leave your tips for the staff there.

Taxis

There is no need to tip taxi drivers unless you feel their service has been excellent. In this case, the gracious thing to do is round up to the nearest Turkish Lira, or the nearest multiple of 5. For instance, a fare of TL 23.50 may be rounded up to either TL 24 or TL 25.

Hammams and Spas

Hammams are one of the few places in Turkey where tips are expected and not tipping would be considered rude.

When you leave a Turkish Hammam, the attendants will line up to say goodbye to you. This is a not-so-subtle way to remind you to tip them. 

You should tip about 15% at hammams and spas, split up amongst all the attendants.

Tour Guides

It’s not mandatory to tip tour guides in Turkey as you’ve already paid them for their service. However, if you are particularly happy with the tour you got then it’s a nice gesture to tip the guide.

If you do decide to tip your tour guide, give within the range of 5-15% of the tour cost.
