So what makes Turkey the perfect family travel destination?

For one, Turkish people love children. Traveling to Turkey with kids means you (well, mainly your kids) will get lots of attention and special treatment. On our family trip to Turkey, people would regularly pat our children on the head and give them sweets. I have never experienced a culture that adores children as much as the Turkish do.

Turkey also makes a wonderful family travel destination because of the wide variety of experiences the country has to offer.

As a historic crossroads of civilizations, Turkey has an abundance of archaeological sites. Ancient civilizations such as the Hittites, Persians, Greco-Romans, and Byzantines have at some point in time called Turkey home. Practically everywhere you visit has ancient ruins and sites to explore. These sites are great for families as they are perfect places for children to run around, explore, and ignite their imaginations.

Turkey’s natural scenic beauty is yet another reason to visit with kids. The country has beautiful Mediterranean beaches that are perfect for relaxing. There are also many all-inclusive resorts that take the hassle out of trip planning.

No trip to Turkey is complete without visiting Istanbul. While many people budget five days in Istanbul, you could spend weeks here and only scratch the surface. This bustling city of over 15 million people has unparalleled energy and embodies the phrase “East meets West.”

Parents traveling to Turkey with kids may wonder if Istanbul is a family-friendly destination. Although Istanbul is not the capital of Turkey, it is the largest city in the country and very crowded and hectic. There’s lots of vehicular traffic and parents must be mindful of their children due to trams, buses, and motorcycles.

However, Istanbul is a safe city to visit with children and easy to navigate as a family thanks to the city’s reliable public transit network. With many top museums, historic sites, and theme parks, Istanbul has a lot to offer families and children of every age. Even in winter, when temperatures drop and the city is sometimes blanketed with snow, Istanbul can be a wonderful Turkish family holiday destination.

• Miniaturk Theme Park – A theme park full of miniature versions of famous Turkish landmarks. There is also a 3-D simulation ride of soaring over Turkey and a life-sized maze to get lost in.
• Hagia Sofia – A church turned mosque turned museum turned mosque again and one of the most important buildings in the world. Take a walk through history in a 1,500-year-old architectural marvel.
• Galata Tower – Your whole family will love the panoramic views of Istanbul from the Galata Tower viewpoint. 
• Take a Bosphorus cruise – As easy as hopping on a local ferry, cruise along the Bosphorus from Europe to Asia. Being in the center of this bustling waterway will give you and your kids a true appreciation for Istanbul’s place as a crossroads of the world.

Bodrum

With its beautiful beaches and lush landscapes, Bodrum is an ideal place to take your kids on holiday. You and your children can enjoy exploring ancient ruins and castles, visiting local markets, and taking boat tours. The best place to stay in Bodrum with family is the Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay. This luxury hotel is situated on its own secluded bay. Families can enjoy swimming in the infinity pool and parents can luxuriate at the spa. There are also four on-site restaurants, two of which are casual and kid-friendly. The one downside is that it’s not within walking distance to the city center, but the hotel has a convenient and reliable taxi service available and they are quick to accommodate

Fethiye

Fethiye is located on Turkey’s southwestern Turquoise Coast. The town is famous for its harbor and boat trips as well as the rock tombs carved into the cliffs above the town. It is a good destination for families looking for pretty beaches and who also want a bit more adventure. Moreover, being less well-known than some of the other beach destinations along the Turkish coast, a holiday here is more budget-friendly and generally less crowded.

Nearby Oludeniz has a sheltered lagoon and is perfect for swimming and water activities ranging from scenic boat tours to banana boat rides. This beach is particularly good for young children as the lagoon is protected from tides and large waves. For a bit more of an adventure, walk part of the Lycian Way or take a boat trip to one of the islands in Fethiye Bay or to Butterfly beach (which is only accessible by boat). Water taxis to Butterfly beach leave from Oludeniz and are the best way to see the beach.

After a day by the sea check out some of the cultural sights in the area such as Amyntas Rock Tombs and the ghost town of Kayakoy. The rock tombs were carved into the cliff above Fethiye so ancient angels could reach the dead. The ghost village is a short drive or taxi ride away. It was abandoned in 1923 during a population exchange with Greece.

• Fethiye Castle – Ruins from a 12th-century castle built by crusaders. The site has phenomenal views of the bay and city below.
• Boat Tours – Daily boats and water taxis operate out of Fethiye, ready to take you to Gocek, the Twelve Islands, or Oludeniz.
• Amyntas Rock Tombs – Carved into the steep slopes of the hills around Fethiye, these rock tombs date back to the 4th century BCE. There’s a lot of steps going up, but families willing to hike up will be rewarded with sweeping views and the opportunity to explore this unique ancient site.
• Kayakoy – If you’re renting a car, take a day trip from Fethiye to the Kayakoy ghost town. Once home to around 10,000 Greek residents who were relocated at the end of the Greco-Turkish war, the town is now a living museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore this eerily quiet city and its stone houses and churches.

Antalya

A popular beach destination, Antalya is certainly no hidden gem. This Mediterranean city is lined with beachfront hotels and resorts. Despite its popularity, Antalya retains its ancient charm, particularly in the old city. 

Antalya is an ideal family vacation spot, especially if your family is looking for a beach vacation. However, Antalya is for more than just beachgoers! The city is home to one of the best Archaeological museums in the country and a perfect jumping-off point to see many ancient ruins. Families visiting Antalya can relax on the beach, take a scenic boat tour in the Mediterranean, and explore ancient cities, all in one vacation.

• Antalya Museum – One of Turkey’s premier archaeological museums, the Antalya Museum houses ancient artifacts from the Antalya region. Especially notable are the Roman statues and sarcophagi from the ancient city of Perge, an easy day trip from Antalya.
• Antalya Toy Museum – This kid-friendly museum houses more than 3,000 toys. The oldest toys in the collection date back to 1870.
• Marine Biology Museum – The tanks in this museum hold a collection of mostly local fish. Don’t expect an aquarium, as these fish are all preserved in formaldehyde and lit up by eerie blue lights.
• Konyaalti Beach – This long strip of pebbly beach is Antalya’s main waterfront drag. It’s a perfect place to bask in the sun and swim with kids. Restaurants and playgrounds are located right off the water, making this the perfect place to base yourself for a day of fun in the sun. 
• Old Harbor – This lively section of Antalya is lined with mostly mediocre restaurants, but the atmosphere is worth sitting out for a drink or meal. The Old Harbor is also where boat tours depart.

Best place to stay in Antalya for families

Where you stay in Antalya depends largely on whether you’re planning a beach holiday or not, but basing yourself in the atmospheric Old City can be a great option. There are many old Ottoman Mansions that have been converted into comfortable hotels, but I recommend the family-run Tekeli Konaklari. The father-son team that runs this hotel is friendly and hospitable, and the rooms are lush and comfortable for families. 

Izmir

This ancient city has origins dating back 7,000 years. Originally named Smyrna, the city of Izmir was once a vital port city. Over the years it has been ravaged by war and earthquakes, however, the city with its complex history has retained its vibrancy with a lively waterfront promenade and bustling markets.

Today Izmir is the country’s third-largest city. The revitalized waterfront promenade is especially nice for families to visit, and some quirky museums will delight you and your children. Izmir is also a good spot to base your family if planning to make a day trip to Ephesus.

• Kordon – The lively waterfront promenade along the Aegean sea. Popular with locals for kite flying in the summer months and is dotted with restaurants and plenty of outdoor seating.
• Konak Square – This bustling square is centered around one of Izmir’s most famous landmarks, the Saat Kulesi (clock tower). The square is a great place to let the kids run around and feed pigeons (birdseed is on sale everywhere you look).
• Ethnography Museum – Focusing on folk art and daily life, this museum has some quirky exhibits. Family favorites include the camel wrestling gear.
• Kemeralti Market – Izmir’s energetic marketplace. Get lost in the maze of streets packed with stalls selling everything under the sun. While many vendors sell tacky tourist souvenirs, you will also come across many artisan workshops.

Where to stay in Izmir with kids

For affordable, family-friendly accommodations in Izmir head to the Karaca Hotel. This hotel in the heart of Izmir has spacious family rooms and great amenities, including free tickets to the movie theater next door.

Goreme (Cappadocia)

A scenic wonderland with its fairy chimney rock formations, Cappadocia is the ideal place to visit with kids. The natural beauty of this worthwhile destination is punctuated every morning by the hot air balloons that fill the sky each morning giving it an otherworldly air. 

Goreme is in the heart of Cappadocia and the perfect base for exploring the region. With many cave hotels and restaurants to choose from, Goreme has developed to support Cappadocia’s mass tourism.

For families looking to hike, explore caves and underground cities, and generally get out in nature, Cappadocia is a perfect destination.

While in Cappadocia, I recommend basing yourself in the town of Goreme. Centrally located and an easy drive to many top sites, Goreme is built up enough to have restaurants and shopping without losing its local charm.

Best things to do in Cappadocia with kids

• Goreme Open Air Museum – Wander inside ancient churches carved into the rocks. The Goreme Open Air Museum has some of the best-preserved examples of early Christian wall frescoes.
• Watch the hot air balloons – If you get up early enough, make sure to watch the hot air balloons float over Cappadocia, preferably while eating breakfast on your hotel’s terrace.
• Go for a hike – Cappadocia’s original appeal to foreigners was its extensive hiking. Today, the trails are mostly empty and a great way to get away from the crowds and see some lesser visited sights.
• Zelve Open Air Museum – An entire site of cave dwellings – homes cut into the canyon rocks. Locals were living in these cave homes until the 1950s when they were relocated due to erosion.
• Derinkuyu and Kaymakli – These two underground cities are fun – if a bit claustrophobic – to explore. I recommend visiting with a guide as there is no information posted onsite.

Where to stay in Goreme with kids

For a complete Cappadocia experience, I recommend staying in a cave hotel like Aydinli Cave Hotel. Not only does Aydinli Cave have the best breakfast we ate during our family holiday in Turkey, but their terraced breakfast room has stunning views of the hot air balloons. Additionally, the staff are extremely friendly and love children.

Ankara

Turkey’s capital city is often skipped by foreign tourists, yet it’s the best place to learn about modern Turkish history. Once a small town, Ankara is now a booming city and the center of the Turkish Republic.

With its many parks and green spaces, Ankara is a pleasant city to visit with family and a welcome reprieve from some of the more congested cities you may visit. There are many family-friendly restaurants and activities that make it a perfect stop on your family trip to Turkey.

• Anitkabir – The mausoleum for Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish Republic. Learn about the bloody start to what we now know as Turkiye, and what makes Kemal Ataturk such a significant figure to the Turkish people.
• Ankara Citadel – A walled section of the old city complete with picturesque cobblestoned streets and timbered houses. An interesting place to stroll, shop, and take in sweeping panoramic views of the city.
• Genclik Park – A well-manicured green space that almost makes you forget you’re in a city of 4 million people. The park also houses an amusement park that kids will love.
• Haci Bayram Camii – Ankara’s most important mosque abutting the ruins of an ancient Roman Temple.

Where to stay in Ankara with kids

The Radisson Blu Hotel in Ankara is well-located, clean, and accommodating for families. Their family suites are comfortable, and the two bathrooms are perfect for families with older children. The hotel is also centrally located on bus lines and across the street from a dolmus station.

Marmaris

If you’re looking for the perfect family-friendly resort holiday in Turkey, then set your sights on Marmaris. This beautiful seafront promenade is lined with resorts that are worlds unto themselves. Be prepared for some serious relaxation and an abundance of family fun.

Marmaris is a stress-free, no-fuss, family destination and resort town. Many Marmaris resorts are all-inclusive and have fun activities geared toward children, such as game rooms, kids’ clubs, and children’s play areas. All within a stone’s throw of the Mediterranean.

• Relax at your resort – swim in the Mediterranean, cool off in the pool, and let your kids enjoy the many kid-friendly resort amenities while you unwind.
• Walk the seafront promenade – The reason Marmaris has become such a popular beach destination is its beautiful surroundings. Walk the promenade for lovely views of the sea and mountains, stopping for refreshments in the cafes and restaurants along the way.
• Cleopatra Island – An easy day trip from Marmaris, head to the beautiful Cleopatra Island (also known as Cedar Island) to explore ancient Roman ruins.

Selçuk

The town of Selçuk in western Turkey is well known as the gateway to Ephesus. However, the small town of Selçuk has more to offer. Visitors to Selçuk can step inside an ancient mosque, explore a mountaintop castle, and discover early Christian history. Selçuk also makes a great base to explore nearby Şirince and other charming hill towns.

Despite its small size, Selçuk is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Turkey and makes for a great family holiday destination in Turkey. The town’s many outdoor ruins are perfect destinations for families that enjoy history, and the town center has many kid-friendly restaurants.

• Ephesus – One of the oldest Greek settlements and later a seat of the Roman government, Ephesus was one of the largest and most important cities of the ancient world. Kids will love exploring these well-preserved ruins and imagining what life must have been like over 2,000 years ago when this was a thriving metropolis.
• Ephesus Archaeological Museum – Dive deeper into the ruins of Ephesus by visiting the Ephesus Archaeological Museum. Full of statues and artifacts found during the excavation of the city, this museum will round out your Ephesus experience.
• Selçuk Castle – A former Byzantine fort built atop the hill, the Byzantine castle is a quick hike that will reward families with sweeping panoramic views of the area.
• Isa Bay Mosque – This 14th-century mosque was nearly destroyed after two earthquakes struck the region. Thankfully it was restored in 1975, and visitors can now enjoy this remarkable example of Selçuk Turkish architecture.
• Basilica of Saint John – These ruins were once a remarkable church built by Emperor Justinian in 500 CE to mark the spot where St. John the Evangelist was buried.
• Şirince – The nearby town of Şirince is an easy day trip from Selçuk and great to explore with kids. This scenic town is a nice one to explore on foot with many shops selling local food products. The town is also famous for its fruit wines, which are worth trying over a meal in the town center.

The family-run Celsus Hotel, just across from the Basilica of Saint John, has comfortable family rooms and accommodations. During our visit, the hotel staff were helpful with planning our time in Selçuk and provided advice on how best to explore the region. The breakfast was also one of the best we had in Turkey, with multiple kinds of cheese, honey, simits, vegetables, and eggs cooked to order.

Kuşadası

The well-known cruise port of Kuşadası with its bustling, tourist-friendly atmosphere is a great destination in Turkey for families.

Kuşadası is located on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. Once a sleepy port town, the city is now a popular destination for its nearby beaches, resorts, and its proximity to ancient Ephesus and Pamukkale. It’s a perfect base camp for many stops on a 10-day Turkey itinerary.

The most obvious family-friendly feature of Kuşadası is its many beaches. The largest is Long Beach. Because of its size, families can find a private spot to themselves even during peak tourist season. Ladies Beach is the easiest to access as it’s right downtown and close to the boardwalk and many restaurants.

Kuşadası is also home to several water parks, such as Tortuga Water Park. The pirate-themed water park has colorful slides and attractions suitable for the smallest kiddos as well as adults. It’s a great place to keep the kids entertained for a day.

For families interested in visiting historic sites, Kuşadası Castle is worth a trip. The castle, built in the 1400s, is perched on an island off the coast and is surrounded by a garden. It’s extremely well preserved and kids will enjoy exploring the ancient walls and learning about the battles that took place here several hundred years ago.

Kid-friendly activities in Kuşadası

• Tortuga Water Park – A pirate-themed water park with 14 slides, an adventure pool, and many swimming pools, offering summertime family fun for the whole family.
• Kuşadası Castle – Built in the 1400s to protect Kuşadası’s harbor, this historic castle is free to explore. Kids will love climbing the castle walls and learning about the battles that took place there.
• Ladies Beach – Downtown and easily accessible, this beach is in close proximity to the boardwalk and many restaurants and concessions.
• Long Beach – Kuşadası’s largest beach and a great place to spread out and enjoy the Turkish sun.

There are plenty of accommodation options in Kuşadası. The Ramada Resort is both all-inclusive and family-friendly with golf courses and a pool with waterslides. Guests here love the clean and spacious rooms, as well as the proximity to the beach.

Kars

In Kars, you’ll find attractions like the 12th-century Kars Castle, the historic city of Ani which was once the capital of an Armenian kingdom (but is now in modern-day Turkey!) and, if you’re visiting Turkey in winter, the slopes of Sarıkamış aren’t too far away. Here, visitors can take to the slopes independently or take a ski lesson. 

For a unique experience that will be a hit with the kids, consider traveling to Kars via the Eastern Express Train. The Eastern Express train starts in Ankara and terminates in Kars. A railroad spanning through the eastern part of the country, the Eastern Express train is a lesser-visited attraction in Turkey. However, it’s easy to book and is a comfortable way of exploring the country, making it a fantastic attraction for families in Turkey! 

Tickets are affordable, at around $10 – $20 per person in a sleeper. And, if you’re a family of four, you can book an entire cabin for all of you! You’ll be able to take in the sweeping views of East Turkey from your comfortable cabin, and when you’re hungry, you can make your way to the restaurant car where a variety of food and drinks are on offer. 

Best things to do in Kars for families

• Ride the Eastern Express train between Ankara and Kars – This bucket-list rail experience connects Ankara and Kars. Families can book sleeper cabins and enjoy watching eastern Turkey flash by as they relax in comfort on the train.
• Kars Castle – A 12th-century castle built on a hill with commanding views of Kars and the surrounding area.
• Skiing at Sarıkamış – During a winter trip to Turkey, head to the slopes of Sarıkamış for the day.
• Ani – The former capital of the Armenian Kingdom and one of the few places in Turkey to see ancient Armenian Rock churches.

Blessed with some of the best beaches in Turkey, Kaş on the Turquoise Coast is a great family destination in Turkey. This laid-back town strikes the perfect balance between relaxing on the beach and activities to keep you and your family entertained.

Kaş is just gorgeous, with splendid beaches, plenty of taverns along the waterfront serving fantastic Turkish and western food, boat trips to nearby islands, and some excellent hiking in the mountains backing the town. Those looking for a bit of history will enjoy the ancient theatre in town and Lycian ruins scattered around the area.

The beaches around Kaş are shallow, and the clear, warm water is just the place where the whole family can unwind. We really liked the beaches of Limanagzi, a short boat ride away from the Kaş waterfront for the low-key beach clubs along the coves. Most beaches around Kaş are pebbled, but the incredible Kaputas beach outside town comes with unreal blue water and a golden stretch of sand.

Going on a gulet cruise along the coastline of Kaş is a great day out on the water. The most popular cruise heads to the sunken City of Kekova, where you can see an ancient city submerged under the water, followed by exploring some hidden coves and snorkeling.

One of the islands you’ll see from Kaş is the Greek Island of Kastellorizo. This Greek island makes for another great day trip and can be reached by ferry within half an hour.

• Gulet Cruise – Cruise the blue waters of the Mediterranean in luxury. Gulet cruises are ideal for exploring the Turquoise Coast as these small boats can get to parts of the coast that large boats cannot.
