Is Malta Part of Italy? Everything You Need to Know!

Have you ever wondered: Is Malta part of Italy?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone!

Malta is a small independent country smack-dab in the middle of the Mediterranean. While Malta has been an important port of call for Mediterranean traders for centuries, many people today haven’t even heard of this small island nation. And to be perfectly honest, until recently, I was one of those people.

I had been ignorant about Malta up until I traveled there this past summer. Let me tell you, Malta is a gem of a country and a great place to travel with kids. It’s also very close to the Italian island of Sicily (sidebar: Sicily with kids is also a great idea!). Given the close proximity, about 50 miles, it’s no wonder people question if Malta is part of Italy.

In this post, I answer all sorts of questions, from “Is Malta part of Italy?” (No) to “Is Malta in Africa?” (also no), and more. If you’re interested in learning more about the country of Malta, its history, language, and culture, then read on!

Is Malta independent or part of Italy?

Malta has never been a part of Italy, but its history is marked by a series of different rulers and influences. Located in the middle of the Mediterranean, Malta’s strategic location has made it a crossroads of civilizations for millennia. The island has been home to Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and Normans. All these civilizations left their marks in the form of ancient ruins, language, and culture.

For over 200 years, Malta was ruled by the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Knights of Malta. The Knights established a significant presence, leaving behind impressive fortifications and architecture.

The French briefly ruled in the late 18th century, followed by British colonial rule that lasted until Malta’s independence in 1964. Since then, Malta has been an independent nation, with its own government and distinct identity.

Malta is not part of Italy due to historical and geographical reasons. Throughout the centuries, Malta has been under the control of various empires and powers, but it has never been under Italian rule.

The Treaty of Paris in 1814 officially placed Malta under British control, a status that continued until Malta gained its independence in 1964. This history of foreign rule and influence, combined with the unique Maltese language and culture, has solidified Malta as a separate entity from Italy.
