Top Spring Destinations to Visit in Europe
1. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam is at its best in spring, with flowers blooming everywhere and a calendar full of events. Between the tulips and the cherry blossoms, the city is awash in color.
Spring in the Netherlands is most famous for the colorful fields of tulips, and there is no better place to experience them than Keukenhof Gardens. Located just outside of Amsterdam, the gardens showcase thousands of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.
Back in the city, enjoy the annual Tulip Festival, along with visiting some of the best art museums in Europe: the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. As the city is less crowded in the spring, grab tickets to visit the Anne Frank House, a heart-wrenching and must-see site that can be difficult to get tickets for.

2. Dublin, Ireland
I may be biased after living in Dublin for three years, but spring is one of the best times to visit the Irish capital. The city is shaking off its winter chill and the days start getting longer and longer.
There’s a palpable energy to Dublin in spring, and locals are out and about taking advantage of longer days and warmer temperatures. The city comes alive with parades, live music, and street performances, offering a vibrant introduction to Dublin’s lively culture. Enjoy spring blooms with a stroll through St. Stephen’s Green or Phoenix Park. See Dublin from the water by taking a boat tour, or sample some Irish whiskey at one of Dublin’s many distilleries.
Spring also means smaller crowds compared to summer, so it’s easier to enjoy Dublin’s charming neighborhoods, cozy pubs, and the growing food scene. Whether you’re drawn to history, nightlife, or the friendly atmosphere, Dublin in spring offers a warm and welcoming experience.
Don’t Miss: St. Patrick’s Day (March 17); International Literature Festival (May 16-25); Dublin Dance Festival (May 13-24).

People often quip that Ireland can experience four seasons in a day, and that’s definitely true for the spring!
3. Malta
If you’re looking for a warm European destination to travel to in spring then consider Malta. Not only is this small island country ideally situated in the middle of the Mediterranean, but it’s also a relatively lesser-known travel destination. Spring is the perfect time to visit Malta as the island blooms with wildflowers. Additionally, you can visit the country’s many beaches and enjoy warm temperatures before the sweltering summer months begin.
Malta is also a wonderful family destination. Kids will love exploring the Megalithic Temples, swimming in the Blue Lagoon, or splashing around at Popeye’s Village. The abundance of kid-friendly activities put Malta high on my list of family-friendly spring break destinations in Europe.
With its blend of history, culture, and Mediterranean charm, Malta in spring is a peaceful yet vibrant destination.
Don’t Miss: St. Patrick’s Day (March 17); Feast of St. Joseph (March 19); Freedom Day (March 31); Easter and Holy Week.

If the weather does turn bad, pop into one of the city’s many great museums, like the excellent Royal Museums of Fine Arts.
There are also many great spring events you can time your visit around, like the Brosella Spring Festival in March and Art Brussels in April, as well as frequent costume parades for the city’s unofficial icon, Manneken Pis.

In Sicily, you can walk in the footsteps of ancient civilizations at the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento or the Greek Theatre of Catania. Spend a day in Taormina soaking up beautiful Mediterranean views or head to Noto and marvel at the stunning baroque architecture. Grab some street food at the market in Palermo or climb up Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano.
The island’s spring season is also marked by local festivals, such as the Easter processions, that offer a glimpse into Sicilian traditions.
The best way to experience Sicily is by renting a car and road-tripping around the island. Set your own pace, get off the beaten track, and enjoy the beauty and magic of this incredible island.

8. Amalfi Coast, Italy
The Amalfi Coast is no hidden gem, and come summer tourists flock to the beaches here, filling every corner. It can be downright unpleasant (and one of the many reasons I prefer Sicily to the Amalfi Coast), which is why I recommend visiting this part of Italy in the spring instead.
Not only is the weather perfect for outdoor activities, but the crowds are light and the foliage is in full bloom.
The cliffs, lined with colorful villages like Positano and Ravello, are covered in lush greenery and flowers.

Check out many of Turkey’s famous landmarks, like the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace, without the large tourist crowds.
One can’t-miss spring highlight is to see the tulips in bloom outside the Blue Mosque. The Ottomans loved tulips, and come springtime their obsession with these flowers can be seen throughout the city.
While Istanbul is a great destination no matter the season, warm spring weather, flowers in bloom, and bright green foliage returning to the trees make spring one of the best times to tour this incredible city.
Spring is also a great time to enjoy Istanbul’s festival scene, such as the Istanbul Film Festival in April and the Tulip Festival in Emirgan Park. Another great spring activity is to shop for souvenirs at the Grand Bazaar or drink Turkish tea or coffee at an outdoor cafe.

Rain showers are frequent, especially in March. While the weather can be poor, it’s still a worthwhile time to visit the city.
11. Colmar, France
The cobbled streets, colorful half-timbered houses, and canals of Colmar create a fairytale-like atmosphere. Located in France’s Alsace region, this charming town is thought to have inspired Walt Disney’s classic, Beauty and the Beast.
Come spring, the town’s flower-filled streets come alive with vibrant colors. Wander the narrow town streets, sample delicious Alsatian cuisine (a mix of French and German fare), and take a bike ride through the neighboring vineyards. Alsace is famous for its cuvee, a sparkling wine often drunk with breakfast.
Colmar is also home to several spring festivals, including the Easter and Spring Markets in April.
Don’t Miss: Easter and Spring Markets (March 28-April 21); Spring Cellars.

13. Rome, Italy
The “eternal city” is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, and for good reason. Yet summers here are hot and muggy while winters can be cold and biting. Spring is the perfect time to visit Rome. Not only will you beat the crowds, but you’ll also enjoy the city’s best season weather-wise.
Explore the city’s iconic landmarks, like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Roman Forum. Make a trip to the Vatican to tour the museum and St. Peter’s. One of my favorite museums in Rome is the Villa Borghese, and in spring the surrounding gardens come alive with flowers.

The town’s medieval old town and surrounding mountains are incredibly scenic in spring, with blooming flowers set upon green hillsides. The weather is ideal for hiking or strolling around the Kotor City Walls or enjoying a boat ride around the bay.
Spring also brings a quieter atmosphere, with fewer tourists than in summer. As a popular cruise destination, Kotor can be overrun with day trippers throughout the summer, making it hard to explore Kotor’s narrow streets and historic churches.
Don’t Miss: Youth Day (May 25); Spring Sailing Regatta (April);
Weather: Kotor gets hot in the summer, but spring temperatures are much milder. Expect average temperatures between 50°F to 64°F (10°C to 18°C) in March to 53°F to 75°F (12°C to 24°C) by May. The weather is generally sunny with few showers.
