While living in Dublin, I managed to visit all but one of the city’s whiskey distilleries, and I’ve enjoyed each for different reasons. Jameson feels like a well-run show, Teeling lets you see the distilling process in action, Pearse Lyons weaves in local history, and the Dublin Liberties Distillery offers a little bit of everything.

But if you only have time for one, you probably want to know which is best. For me, Jameson is the top choice overall, while Teeling is the one to pick if you want a closer look at how whiskey is made.

In this post, I’ll share my first-hand experience at the best distilleries in Dublin. By the end, you’ll know exactly which one is right for you on your trip to Dublin.

5 Best Whiskey Distilleries in Dublin, Ireland

1. Jameson Distillery, Bow Street

If you only have time for one distillery in Dublin, make it Jameson. 

While the Dublin location is not technically a distillery (this can be found at their location in Midleton, County Cork), Jameson Bow Street is the quintessential Irish whiskey experience and one of the city’s most popular attractions. Located in the Smithfield neighborhood, the Jameson Bow St. Distillery is a must-visit for whiskey enthusiasts, especially if this is your first trip to Dublin or Ireland.

The tour begins with one of their signature welcome drinks, which you can either enjoy in their stylish all-wood bar or sip while exploring the gallery. When it’s time for your tour, your guide will take you through the history of Jameson and Dublin’s whiskey heritage, bringing the past to life through an interactive display. 

You’ll also learn about Jameson’s “Grain to Glass” process, an engaging explanation of how whiskey is made that allows you to touch, smell, and see the ingredients at various stages in production. The experience ends with a comparative tasting of three Jameson whiskeys and a chance to put all your newfound knowledge of whiskey to the test (not to mention finally use your sense of taste!).

Afterward, you can linger in the stylish all-wood bar with another drink (a fun rainy day activity!) or take time to explore more of the museum-like exhibits on your own. Of course, don’t forget to hit up the gift shop, where you can find all sorts of Jameson products and even purchase a personalized whiskey bottle!

The Jameson Bow St Distillery is fun, polished, and everything you’d expect from Ireland’s most famous whiskey name.

2. Pearse Lyons Distillery

One of the most unique distillery experiences in Dublin can be found at Pearse Lyons. This is one of Dublin’s newer distilleries, situated within a beautifully restored old church, complete with soaring ceilings and colorful stained glass windows. It’s hard not to feel like the art of whiskey-making has been elevated to something reverent here.

The tour begins with a short video introduction from founder Pearse Lyons, explaining why he chose to open a distillery in Dublin and what’s so special about this location in the Liberties District. It turns out opportunity, luck, and fate all played a role, and the answer is a deeply personal familial connection that is woven throughout the experience. This personal connection and rich history truly make this distillery stand out from others in Dublin.

What I loved most about my visit to Pearse Lyons was how much history is layered into the tour. In addition to learning about Dublin’s Golden Triangle and the distilling process itself, you’ll also get a guided walk through the centuries-old graveyard, the final resting place of thousands of souls (an especially shocking fact when you see the small size of the graveyard!). 

My tour guide was especially knowledgeable and passionate, and her enthusiasm for whiskey was infectious and made the tour especially memorable.

At the end of your tour, enter the old sanctuary where gleaming copper stills stand in what was once the altar, framed by stained glass windows. It’s strikingly beautiful, and in my opinion, one of the most atmospheric distilleries in Dublin. It’s here that you’ll enjoy your tasting of anywhere from three to five Irish Whiskeys, depending on which tour you book. 

I took the Trilogy tour, the most basic tour option that offers three tastings. True whiskey aficionados should opt for the Legacy Tour, where you can sample five whiskeys, including a premium 12-year-old single malt. 

Between the history, the architecture, and the whiskey, Pearse Lyons offers an exceptional distillery experience unlike any other in Dublin.

3. Teeling Whiskey Distillery

If you’re curious to see whiskey being made right before your eyes, then I recommend you visit the Teeling distillery. It’s the only distillery in Dublin where you can actually look down into the stills and watch the whiskey-making process in action, perfect if you want a behind-the-scenes experience.

Teeling Whiskey Distillery also comes with a storied legacy. Teeling was the first new distillery to open in Dublin in 125 years, since the collapse of the city’s whiskey industry in the early 20th century. But it’s not entirely new….

Whiskey-making has been in the Teeling family since 1782, when the original distillery first opened the Dublin Liberties neighborhood. The modern distillery that you can visit today opened in 2015 and is just a short walk from the site of the original family distillery. 

During your visit, you’ll learn about the history of Teeling and of Dublin’s larger role in whiskey history. The guides here do a fantastic job of weaving history into the tour while also explaining the whiskey production process and how the company operates today.

At the end of the tour, you’ll enjoy a guided tasting of one, three, or five whiskeys, depending on which tour you’ve booked. The basic tour includes one signature whiskey plus a whiskey cocktail, while the premium option lets you sample five different whiskeys. If you’re looking for an extra special experience, you can bottle your own whiskey straight from the cask to take home as a souvenir.

The Teeling distillery tour is one of Dublin’s best whiskey tours, offering a dynamic experience full of history, information, and excellent whiskey.

4. Dublin Liberties Distillery

Dublin is in the midst of a whiskey revival, and one of the newer players on the scene is the Dublin Liberties Distillery. 

Opened in 2019, this distillery sits in the heart of the historic Liberties district, a neighborhood once buzzing with distilleries, brewers, and all manner of colorful (and seedy) Dublin characters. The building itself has lived many lives. From mill to tannery, today it has been reborn as a working distillery.

Your tour begins with a welcome drink of Dubliner Honeycomb Liqueur, then continues on a guided walk through the operational distillery. Along the way, you’ll learn a bit of the history of the Liberties and the process of Irish whiskey-making. The tour relies heavily on storytelling, diving into the seedy underbelly of Dublin’s past and highlighting this rebellious, free-spirited corner of Dublin.

To be honest, this was my least favorite of the Dublin distilleries I’ve visited. But I still think it’s worth experiencing, especially if you’re already in the neighborhood or can’t get tickets to one of the bigger names like Jameson or Teeling. 

My personal highlight was the tasting itself, especially the honey whiskey. While sweet whiskeys aren’t normally my thing, this honeycomb whiskey was excellent! I made sure to bring some home with me and later used it in some homemade whipped cream on top of hot chocolate. Absolutely decadent!

After your tasting, you can relax in the Distillers Bar or browse their gift shop for bottles to take home. While Dublin Liberties isn’t quite as polished as some of the other distilleries in the city, it has its own charm and is a solid addition to Dublin’s growing whiskey scene.

5. Roe and Co Distillery

Of the five whiskey distilleries in Dublin, Roe & Co. is the only one I haven’t personally visited. While I can’t speak to the tour experience firsthand, friends of mine who have been here absolutely raved about the experience!

This distillery offers something very different from the others: instead of a traditional distillery tour, their focus is on immersive, hands-on workshops that lean into cocktail culture and flavor exploration. 

If you’re looking for a more bespoke, interactive experience, this might be the distillery for you.

There are currently two distinct options you can choose from. 

The Flavours Experience is a cocktail workshop built around the “Five Pillars of Flavour”—sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami. During this 45-minute tour, you’ll experiment with your palate, choose a whiskey cocktail tailored to your tastes, and taste a seasonal cocktail creation from their bar team in the Power House Bar. If you love cocktails or want to develop your mixology skills, then this is the tour for you!

Their other tour, Beyond the Blend, is more whiskey-focused. This guided 45-minute workshop familiarizes you with Roe & Co’s deep range of whiskeys. You’ll also enjoy pairing their whiskeys with artisan confections from their onsite pastry chef and chocolatier. Then, get hands-on by creating your own blend and transforming it into a cocktail. This tour is a highly interactive and sensory way to experience Irish whiskey.

Again, if you want a more bespoke whiskey distillery experience and you lean more toward creating, mixing, and savoring the unique flavors rather than walking through the mechanics of production, then definitely plan a visit to Roe & Co while in Dublin. It’s certainly on my list for when I return!

Dublin’s whiskey scene is thriving again, and each distillery offers something a little different. From Jameson’s polished, iconic experience to Teeling’s behind-the-scenes production tour, Pearse Lyons’ blend of history and atmosphere, Dublin Liberties’ storytelling and honey whiskey, and Roe & Co’s creative workshops.
